Car ownership

My husband and i have lived in Turkey for several years,recently he has been arrested and is being held waiting to be deported.We own a car here which is registered in my husbands name.What i desperately need to know is if there is any way possible to transfer the ownership to me so that i may sell it.Obviously my husband is in agreement as i can't bear the thought of it sitting and rusting away.

The transfers of car ownership have to be done formally either in traffic registry office or in notary as it's order by law within the borders of Turkey. Considering that your husband can not go to the registry office, or notary due to lying in jail as an arrested person, you can merely call the notary to the jail(in return of a surplus fee) for making the formalities of transferring the ownership of the car from your husband's name to your's.

As i am in Izmir and my husband in Istanbul and i cannot go to Istanbul would this be a problem or can it be done his end first and then completed in Izmir?

Both sides have to stand before the traffic registry office or notary while transferring the ownership of a vehicle. However, you can get the ownership of the car from a person who is given the power of selling the car by your husband as well if you are unavailable to go to Istanbul.

You certainly need to get the support of a notary at giving the power of selling the car behalf of your husband, as well as transferring the ownership of the car.
